In case you don't know, once upon a time you could be fined and/or imprisoned for not going to church. You could be told to leave your home and area for a period of time and you were generally shunned socially until you decided to go back to church. But at the same time some of these people were heralded for being such non-conformists...well, heralded in private at least.
The "R #" distinction is the period of time that each person was considered backslidden.
